State of Minnesota Hatchery Specialist - NR Specialist Fisheries in Altura, Minnesota
This position will be responsible for various aspects of coldwater salmonid production such as egg and fish husbandry, trout stocking, public education, and facility maintenance, under supervision from the Hatchery Supervisor and Assistant Supervisor. This position will also provide direction to staff, submit monthly and annual reports, collaborate on fish culture related expenditures, and participate in general administrative related tasks.
Primary responsibilities include:
- Assist with fish culture operations at Crystal Springs Hatchery so that production quotas for the State's coldwater stocking program are met with good quality, pathogen free fish.
- Feeding fish and cleaning rearing units.
- Preforming monthly record keeping duties to manage fish production and facility maintenance.
- Monitor biosecurity disinfection sites to enhance a pathogen free work place.
- Participate in and understand site NPDES requirements and accurate record keeping.
- Monitor and record water quality parameters. Adjust and incorporate water conditions, treatments, and equipment so that fish stocks are kept healthy and stress free.
- Research and develop techniques to better site operations and fish production.
- Participate in statewide fish stocking including the operation of a class B fish stocking truck.
- Assist in site maintenance, mowing and brush removal, snow removal, and tractor operation.
- Exemplify safety in all areas of work. Communicate safety concerns to staff.
- Keep up to date on DNR procedures, polices, and training. Encourage safety within the workplace, serve on various hatchery and statewide committees, become engaged in public relations and education programs to inform the public of coldwater hatchery operations and their role in the DNR's Coldwater Management Program.
- Participate in revolving weekend work schedule, occasional extended hour travel, and overnight stays.
Bachelor's Degree inaquaculture, fisheries management, aquatic biology or closely related area.
Experience in basic carpentry, plumbing, electrical, metal working applications, and power tool operation.
Human relations skills to provide direction and develop staff, demonstrate team and consensus building skills, and maintain good working relationships with hatcheries and other internal and external partners.
Project management skills/experience sufficient to maintain a positive working environment and timely completion of work/projects.
Knowledge of fish health management, waste water management and fish nutrition.
Written and oral communication skills sufficient to inform the public of fish culture programs and to communicate effectively with other staff.
Ability to work in adverse weather and environmental conditions.
Computer skills including knowledge of databases, spreadsheets and word processing sufficient to create and write reports and access data.
Basic knowledge of heavy equipment (mid-size tractors) and UTV operation.
Professional level coldwater hatchery experience.
Technical experience in coldwater fish propagation in a natural resources organization.
Technical experience in fish management and/or fish propagation.
Completion of USFWS short courses or equivalent in fish health and coldwater fish culture.
Lead work skills/experience.
Experience with data management, statistical analysis, and report preparation.
Class B Driver's License (CDL) with tanker endorsement.
Successful participation of the State of Minnesota Star of the North Fellowship program.
Requires regular lifting articles of 50-pounds and occasional lifting of items up to 100-pounds. Frequently lifting and/or carrying objects such as heavy tools and file boxes. This job may require walking or standing to a significant degree on rough terrain or may involve sitting most of the time.
This position requires an unrestricted Class B Driver's License with a tanker endorsement or the ability to obtain one within the first 6 months of employement with a clear driving record.
The selected applicant will be required to pass a pre-employment drug screen. Employees who are required to retain this license will be included in a random drug and alcohol testing program.
