This role is integral to providing epidemiological support during the ongoing COVID-19 disease outbreak response; this includes assisting with disease investigations, data management, and report writing. This position exists to minimize morbidity and mortality associated with COVID-19 among Minnesota residents by conducting a broad and complex range of investigative and analytical epidemiologic activities. Responsibilities include collecting,summarizing, and disseminating epidemiologic data; coordinating COVID-19 outbreak investigations and implementing control measures; conducting special studies; providing epidemiologic consultation for health care providers, other professionals, and the general public; developing and disseminating information and standard recommendations regarding the epidemiology, prevention and control of the disease; and supporting the general functions of the COVID-19 CICT Section and the Infectious Disease Epidemiology, Prevention and Control (IDEPC) Division. The resource(s) will be required to work independently to address complex issues and solve problems related infectious disease investigations and basic epidemiological support. The resource(s) are expected to solve problems as they arise regarding data collection, missing or incomplete data, data entry and analysis including inconsistencies between input and output. Appropriate corrective measures are to be instituted by the resource(s). The resource(s) are expected to develop methods of disease surveillance and data analysis. Problem solving also involves developing appropriate measures to gain cooperation of individuals and institutions to report cases of disease and otherwise assists MDH in fulfilling its duties of disease surveillance and control with respect to the COVID-19 disease. Position Responsibilities: 1. Provide support to Senior Epidemiologist in maintaining the COVID-19 surveillance system. Utilize the Minnesota Electronic Disease Surveillance System (MEDSS) software to manage case-specific data variables obtained from patient medical records. Development of new and revision of current data collection tools for case investigations. Management of investigation data in local databases such as MEDSS. Prepare and disseminate data summaries, analyses and other reports. Pull data from local public health systems to abstract COVID-19 investigation results and re-prioritize undiagnosed contacts. Collect and maintain patient-specific laboratory data, and manage such data in paper and electronic databases. Support maintenance of the MEDSS system to track the treatment status of infected individuals. Provide direct support to local public health for the data management of outbreak investigations as needed. 2. Conduct and support case investigations and contact tracing. Work under direction of Senior Epidemiologist to conduct infectious case investigations and contact tracing of COVID-19 disease in Minnesota communities. Solicit reports of COVID-19 disease from health professionals in clinical settings, epidemiologists in the Epidemiology Field Services section, and local public health officials. Interview patients, carriers, suspected cases, public and private healthcare providers and others with knowledge of COVID-19 illness being investigated.
