Pace Analytical Services, Inc. Lab Manager in Maple Grove, Minnesota

The Lab Manager will provide strategic direction and technical leadership for creation, development and characterization of novel formulations for new products to support their evaluation in end-use application studies. Responsible for the design and management of the application development studies (including ASTM and modified ASTM processes), data evaluation, preparation, review and completion of study reports. The successful candidate will work on complex problems where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of various factors. Responsibilities include oversight of the product development readiness for commercialization. The successful candidate will prepare summaries and presentations and communicate results to management, the Advisory Board and investors. The candidate will be a scientific resource during the manufacturing of new products to support development, including shelf stability studies, freeze/thaw, package stability, SDS development, regulation compliance, scale-up, manufacturing process transfer to commercial manufacturing, analysis of new findings and troubleshooting of issues, as well as a resource for the Business Development & Marketing Team during review of potential new product candidates. The Lab Manager will provide strategic leadership, technical expertise, and specialized knowledge in formulation development to support testing of new products.

  • Manage the laboratory and the technical team.

  • Actively participate in writing job descriptions for technical hires, interviewing and selecting new team members. This includes summer interns.

  • Help develop and manage R&D and IP strategy

  • Write and/or review protocols, final development reports, batch records, standard operating procedures, and other technical reports.

  • Responsible for understanding and applying data generated from experiments used to modify/optimize formulations and process parameters.

  • Work effectively in a cross-functional matrix environment, with internal and external customers and proactively communicate with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Ensure all tasks are performed according to approved development protocols and batch records and adhere as much as possible to the 12 principles of green chemistry.

  • Author and review appropriate technical reports and necessary submissions for SDS, SAFER CHOICE or other required reports.

  • Manage strategy for and Protection of IP of formulations and production processes

  • Direct technology transfer to/from contract manufacturing organizations and provide technical input to Director of Manufacturing.

  • Work with Director of Manufacturing to provide technical leadership in ensuring that vendor-manufacturing facilities are compliant and foster relationships with Contracting Testing Laboratories (CTOs), including the review and approval of test records, forms, methods, protocols and reports, to ensure that data and products meet requirements and all appropriate laws and regulatory requirements.

  • Apply scientifically-driven thinking to the development of scientifically sound, well understood, and robust experiments to support new formulations.

  • Design, direct and manage experiments in the laboratory in support of pre-formulation, formulation development, manufacturing process development, and troubleshooting.

  • Author, prepare and present presentations as a company representative at industry events and conferences.

  • Write and apply for various grants as the opportunities arise.

  • Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or Materials Science;

  • Ph.D.or equivalent work experience related to formulation work preferred

  • 10 years or more in the industry with a minimum of 8 years in formulation development area. Suspension experience preferred.

  • Prior management experience preferred.

  • Prior green chemistry work preferred.

  • Understanding of the 12 principles of Green Chemistry

  • Experience in consumer-packaged goods product development is preferred

  • Knowledge of formulation processes and techniques

  • Comprehensive working knowledge of Regulatory Guidance Documents as they relate to quality testing of formulated products.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships

  • Ability to effectively prioritize and deliver on tight timelines

  • Outstanding problem-solving abilities

  • Detail-oriented, with good organizational and project management skills

  • Excellent oral and written communications skills

  • Proficient with MS Office
