Overview

Fairview Health Services is looking for a Lead Laboratory Care Technician in the Acute Care Laboratory at M Health Fairview St. John's Hospital located in Maplewood, MN. This is a Full-time, benefits eligible position, 80 hours/2 week pay period, with rotating Day and Evening shifts, including rotating weekends, holidays and on-call. Day shifts are 4am-12:30pm, 5:30am-2:00pm, 8:30am-5:00pm; Evening shifts are 12:00pm- 8:30pm, 1:30pm-10:00pm and 2:00pm- 10:30pm. Start times subject to change depending on the needs of the department.

Responsibilities/Job Description

Working with diverse populations within a healthcare environment, the Lead Laboratory Care Technician plays an important role in providing quality, proficient and professional services in keeping with Fairview Values as they interact with our patients, families and co-workers. The Lead LCT performs laboratory specimen collection at various Fairview or outreach locations, as well as, provides for safe and secure specimen handling and point of care testing. Responsible for accurately entering orders and collection information into the Laboratory Information System and associated subsystems; monitoring computer logs for incomplete work; scheduling tests/procedures and providing results in LIS/HIS and over the phone, the Lead LCT's attention to detail and accuracy are the foundation for our providing quality laboratory services. Working as an individual or team member, the Lead LCT continuously works towards providing quality service improvement and optimum support to the department and team members in achieving Fairview's goals.

The lead assignment coordinates the daily work flow and solves issues which need resolution within a department, in a peer to peer relationship and as a liaison with leadership. The focus is to strengthen and enhance the work climate and work flow. The lead has a high level of technical expertise and displays role model competency in knowledge, communication and experience while acting as the primary peer resource.

Job Expectations:

Follows established guidelines to obtain specimens and perform procedures.

Obtains blood specimens for all identified patient populations.

Performs phlebotomy at various sites and communicates special handling needs of the specimen.

Uses appropriate communications skills to meet patient/family and other customer needs.

Demonstrates proficiency with point care testing.

May perform EKG’s.

May train others in phlebotomy skills.

Ensures specimens are acceptable for testing including properly identified.

Processes specimens prior to testing or sending to reference labs.

Performs daily quality control, troubleshooting and equipment maintenance.

Monitors inventory, ordering and restocking supplies.

Prioritizes work to achieve optimal patient outcomes.

Prioritizes assigned work.

Transports blood and body fluid under proper conditions and in a timely and safe manner.

Seeks assistance appropriately for problem or unusual situations.

Information Processing

Accurately enters order and collection information into LIS and subsystems.

Monitors computer logs for incomplete work.

Schedules tests/procedures.

Provides results in LIS/HIS and reports over the phone.

Acquires additional computer skills as appropriate to the work area.

Supports and adheres to laboratory quality assurance program.

Maintains a safe work environment.

Adheres to safety protocols.

Follows infection control guidelines.

Responds appropriately to emergent situations.

A specific “lead” assignment for a role is designated and subject to change or modification as deemed by business and department needs. This not a supervisory or management role.

Additional duties :

• Pick up weekends and/or overnights as needed

• Assisting with inventory of laboratory supplies

• Filling out maintenance logs and assisting with required tasks/inspections

• Filling in for minor Technical Supervisor duties during vacations/sick days

• Assisting other LCTs where help is needed during shifts

• Cover for breaks

Qualifications

Required

Education

• High school diploma/GED and completion of a formal phlebotomy education program with didactic and clinical components; completion of an accredited Phlebotomy School/Course (an original transcript or certification of completion must be provided at the time of the interview).

• or high school diploma/GED and completion of one year of full time clinical phlebotomy and laboratory experience;

• or enrollment in final year of MLT or MLS program.

Experience

• Two years of experience in a phlebotomy role

• Successful candidates must be able to provide evidence of the following: successful customer service background within a diverse cultural setting

License/Certification/Registration

• Initial or proof of existing phlebotomy certification and receipt of ASCP, ACA, AMT, certification upon hire: enrollment in the final year of a MLS or MLT program; or eligibility for American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP), American Certification Agency (ACA), American Medical Technologists (AMT). Certification must be maintained at the expense of the employee and is required for continued employment.

• As of 12/31/2019, Lead LCTs will be grandfathered and the certification will not be required. The certification requirement begins 1/1/2020.

• Lead LCT staff hired prior to Jan 1, 2012 who already hold certification as a phlebotomist with ASCP, ACA, AMT, NCCT, or NHA will not be required to maintain (renew) their certification; however, it is strongly recommended.

• Previous experience as a Lead in an formal or informal capacity

License/Certification/Registration

• Phlebotomy Certification upon hire

• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
