Our Bismarck, North Dakota office has an immediate need for an Avian Field Technician to support a variety of biological studies in North Plains and Upper Midwest. This is a temporary, hourly position reporting to our Bismarck, North Dakota Office, with the potential to become a full time permanent position. We are looking for a technician who is located in Minnesota or North Dakota and will consider distributed employment. The technician will work 20-40 hours per week, depending on workload. Overtime is possible and pay rate will be based on qualifications and experience. This position includes hiking in all seasons and conditions. Housing, per diem and work vehicle will be provided.
What you will accomplish
Conduct surveys and collect field data for raptors and other avian species.
Assist project manager and avian ecologists.
Data collection will be primarily ground-based, but may also include aerial surveys.
Record data on field forms or on a digital tablet.
Upload field data to backup servers at the end of each day.
Use topographic maps, aerial photographs, GPS units, and other maps and tools to determine exact locations of project areas, habitat types, and associated landforms.
May conduct biological data/literature searches and reviews.
Assess habitat types, and identify species and landforms.
Operate SWCA vehicles, assure they will perform safely.
Experience with construction monitoring also preferred, but not required.
Experience and qualifications for success
Minimum of B.A. or B.S. in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, or a related field
Excellent knowledge of western raptors, eagles, and other avian species.
Must have experience with avian species identification, data collection, monitoring protocols, data entry, and data QA/QC
Experience completing aerially surveys for avian species preferred but not required.
Minimum of one year of experience in related fieldwork
Ability to record accurate field notes.
Ability to identify species visually and auditorily preferred.
Ability to use digital tablet for GPS navigation and recording of field data.
Ability to conduct fieldwork for long hours in inclement weather conditions. Ability to walk up to 10 miles per day, often in rugged terrain. May have to carry equipment and/or supplies, weighing up to 40 pounds.
Ability to drive a 4wd vehicle and ATV on rugged, backcountry roads.
Ability to take initiative, resolve problems, and create improved procedures to assure tasks are completed in the most effective manner.
Flexibility and willingness to learn company procedures, and ability to try new, improved techniques.
Ability to work as member of a team and individually to make decisions and complete tasks in the most effective manner.
