OptumLab's efforts are driven by math, data, and clinical science, but also focus on the human connections required to understand and treat the chronic diseases that afflict nearly half of the world’s population. To do so, our team tracks the latest in science, technology, and clinical care - including what we can learn from our own data. We then apply these things via research studies, clinical trials, and pilot programs that identify new ways to prevent, detect, and intercept disease for our members.
We are looking for a researcher with expertise in gerontology and a passion for translating science to improve the lives of older adults. The ideal candidate is creative, forward thinking, and adaptable to fast-paced nature of the healthcare industry. Primary Responsibilities :
Partner with business / venture colleagues to progress ideas from discovery to seed and collaborate with external partners
Identify and explore new investment opportunities in Healthy Aging
Develop a multi-year research program in an area(s) critical to healthy aging. Recommend, design, and lead research studies to advance our understanding of various aspects of healthy aging. Subjects may include but are not limited to:
Nutritional aspects of healthy aging
Interventions to address frailty, gait, balance, falls and mobility impairments among older adults
Novel methods for monitoring or early detection of cognitive impairment.
Interception and early detection of diseases (e.g., Dementia, Alzheimer’s Disease, Diabetes, Parkinson’s, Cardiovascular Disease, Osteoarthritis)
Design and analysis of interventions and services that are personalized to the needs of older adults
Engaging traditionally underserved populations
You will work closely with a team of data scientists to analyze and interpret medical claims data and provide critical thinking and actionable interpretation of data science findings. You will work with your team to use these findings to help inform investment decisions and enterprise strategy
You must be a team player and be genuinely willing to work with interdisciplinary groups and help others around you. You may be asked to mentor your colleagues in formal or informal capacities. The ideal candidate will approach this part of the job with great enthusiasm
Ensure compliance with IRB requirements and ethical standards for research / practice
Synthesize information across different fields of study, data sources, and philosophies in order to develop innovative and empirically-sound points of view and internal position papers on aging
Stay current with developments and trends in federal / state health policy, particularly policies that impact the lives of older adults
Build relationships with people throughout the enterprise, your field, and the healthcare system at large to improve our thinking and extend our influence through external publications, pubic-speaking, and conference attendance

PhD in psychology, gerontology, human development, neuroscience, public health, or related field with an emphasis in health and aging
Experience working in ambiguous situations, creates community
Solid quantitative skills and a demonstrated ability to design and lead research studies with aging adult populations
Experience writing and submitting IRB protocols
Ability to locate and synthesize large amounts of scientific information and translate into commercial products / offerings
Ability to communicate your conclusions clearly and elegantly to non-technical audiences
You will be asked to perform this role in an office setting or other company location
Employees are required to screen for symptoms using the ProtectWell mobile app, Interactive Voice Response (i.e., entering your symptoms via phone system) or a similar UnitedHealth Group-approved symptom screener prior to entering the work site each day, in order to keep our work sites safe. Employees must comply with any state and local masking orders.
