At Optum Labs, our Engineering group leverages science, data (including medical claims, health record information, and biosensor data) and machine learning algorithms to build new tools that are reshaping the delivery of healthcare. We are seeking an expert Data Scientist to contribute to the development of our digital health data intelligence platform. In collaboration with world-class scientific domain experts and business leadership, the ideal candidate will design intelligent digital health products including physiological monitoring systems, digital care intervention tools, and mathematical models of disease. Working with other data scientists and engineers, the candidate will further use their expertise in machine learning to build the algorithms that bring these products to life. This candidate is recognized as a thought leader in a technical area of importance to OptumLabs and able to stimulate and advance the work of teams of engineers and data scientists, which may or may not be under the candidate’s direct supervision.
Collaborate with a diverse group of domain science experts, business leaders, and customers to identify new implementations of machine learning algorithms for healthcare
Design end-to-end products that use data and algorithms to enable better delivery of care and faster cycle times on generation of scientific knowledge
Serve as a thought leader, seeding new ideas, hypotheses, and products to be pursued by teams of data scientists and engineers
Develop machine learning software using Python, Airflow, Git, and Google Cloud tools
Conduct research to evaluate the performance of developed tools and iterate on their design and maintenance

PhD degree in quantitative discipline such as Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, Operations Research, or related field OR MS degree with 3+ years of experience in a data science or engineering environment
Experience in a research or product development environment as demonstrated through past work products or projects
Deep knowledge of statistical machine learning methods and experience implementing them in tangible assets
Solid, efficient coding skills in Python
Experience using data processing pipeline software such as Apache Airflow and the Google Cloud suite of technologies
Experience leading data scientists or engineers through either direct supervision or collaborative projects
You will be asked to perform this role in an office setting or other company location
Employees are required to screen for symptoms using the ProtectWell mobile app, Interactive Voice Response (i.e., entering your symptoms via phone system) or a similar UnitedHealth Group-approved symptom screener prior to entering the work site each day, in order to keep our work sites safe. Employees must comply with any state and local masking orders. In addition, when in a UnitedHealth Group building, employees are expected to wear a mask in areas where physical distancing cannot be attained
Experience developing data products that leverage digital signals
Curiosity, a passion for experimenting, and drive to ensure that algorithms deliver the results expected
Ability to work in a dynamic, adaptive culture and work environment
Expertise in machine learning, artificial intelligence, or bioinformatics as demonstrated through scientific publications or conference proceedings
Solid communication skills with both technical and non-technical collaborators
Willingness to challenge assumptions and use data to develop new hypotheses and drive decision-making
Expertise in one or more of the following data science domains:
Biostatistics and bioinformatics
Time series modeling and forecasting
