Position description

Core Responsibilities Include: Donor Recruitment: Telephone recruitment of volunteer blood donors and coordinating multiple appointment schedules based on patient blood product usage and inventory needs. Donor Evaluation and Assessment: Understanding and applying extensive donor criteria which includes medical history, travel locations and lifestyle questions, and regulations of numerous accrediting agencies to ensure patient/donor confidentiality and ensuring a safe blood supply for transfusion. Comply with current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMPs) for manufacturing of blood products to meet quality and safety standards for patient transfusion by following SOP (standard operating procedure) for 1) Obtaining or verifying patient/donor demographics, 2) registration of donors, performing point of care testing and related quality controls. Donor Collection: Following SOP in using aseptic technique to collect unit of blood or blood components, monitoring both the equipment and donors and providing care to donors or patients who have mild, moderate, or severe adverse reactions. Supporting Activities: Proficient use of donor software systems, proficient use and QC of equipment and products, ordering and maintaining work unit supplies. Demonstrates excellence in customer service and public relations to promote a positive, professional image of the Mayo Clinic Blood Donor Program. Demonstrates a commitment to Mayo's culture of safety (pay attention to detail, communicate clearly, have a questioning and receptive attitude, hand-off effectively, support each other). Additional Responsibilities Include: Performs coordination of donor collection mobiles. Duties include development and implementation of new procedures, ensures initial and ongoing competency of laboratory services staff, observance and interpretation of all policies and procedures. The Donor Service Tech III serves as a liaison to the donors and to the Division. Performs all procedures in a safe, accurate, and professional manner. Interacts with all patients in a pleasant, efficient, and cooperative manner. Must be able to work independently as well as a team member. Must be able to adapt to rapidly changing workload. Leads off-site team members through donor reactions and emergency situations. Contributes to Mayo's mission through emphasis on change, patient focused care, quality, and cost containment. Performs duties of technical staff 60-80% of the time. Completes special projects as assigned by administrator, consultant, supervisor, assistant supervisor, and recruiter. May coordinate continuing education opportunities for the site. Must have good manual dexterity. Will have constant patient/donor contact that requires excellent interpersonal and customer service skills. Donor Service Technicians must successfully complete a 6-month training course and pass competency evaluations. This training includes classroom instruction, written examinations, and on the job training.

Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED and one year of telemarketing, call center or customer service (appointment scheduler or retail/service industry) experience and 18 months of previous blood banking experience or currently employed as a Donor Service Tech II for at least 18 months.

Additional qualifications

Associate's Degree and coursework in a healthcare related field is preferred. Requires computer skills (i.e., Windows-based applications and intranet/internet use) with the ability to key board. Ability to work independently; be goal directed and have strong organizational skills. Effectively multitask without compromising quality. Excel in both verbal and written communication, including proper telephone etiquette, face-to-face interactions, and electronic communications. Ability to communicate with individuals and small groups with credibility and confidence. Ability to handle difficult situations, remain calm under stress, manage emotional situations, display empathy and maintain positive communication. Turn problems into opportunities by developing innovative and creative solutions. Demonstrate a friendly, positive attitude, display energy and drive in performing daily responsibilities, and convey an impression which reflects favorably upon the Mayo Blood Donor Program and Mayo Clinic. Must be flexible as well as easily adapt to a changing work environment which will require ongoing maintenance of job-related skills/activities. Must be able to work independently without direct supervision. Must use excellent problem-solving and leadership skills in dealing with difficult situations. Additional years' experience as a Donor Service Technician and proficiency in all defined competencies desirable.

License or certification

Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS). Individuals without BCLS will be required to successfully complete the course within 6 months of employment. A valid driver's license.

Compensation Detail

Education, experience and tenure may be considered along with internal equity when job offers are extended. The minimum pay rate is $17.91 per hour.
