Position description This posting is to hire either a Histotechnologist or a Histology Technician. Histotechnologist: Prepares specimens and performs testing procedures on pathology specimens that results in the creation of microscopic slide preparations for diagnostic and/or prognostic analysis by the pathology. Applies technical theory to provide overall operations support necessary to maintain and optimize testing activities. Able to accommodate scheduling adjustments, off shifts, holidays, on-call, and weekend work assignments. Assists with training of students and employees.

Histology Technician: Performs a variety of technical procedures that result in the creation of microscopic slide preparations. These technical procedures may include: accessioning specimens; specimen processing and microtomy techniques; paraffin, frozen, and plastic. Technical staining procedures include: routine Hematoxylin and Eosin, special stains, immunofluorescence, immunohistochemical staining, and in situ hybridization. Participates in on-call rotations, including weekends as needed. Assists with training of students and new employees.

Minimum Education and/or Experience Required (Minimum Job Requirements, Education Requirements, Experience):

Associates degree required with coursework including 24 semester hours of the following: at least 12 credit hours in chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology; AND 6 credit hours in chemistry; AND 6 credit hours in biology.

Histotechnologist

Minimum Education and/or Experience Required (Minimum Job Requirements, Education Requirements, Experience):

Bachelor's degree and HTL certified through the ASCP Board of Registry.

Additional Experience and/or Qualifications (Has Achieved Competency in the Following Areas, Job Knowledge and Additional Considerations): Bachelor's degree in medical technology (MT), Clinical Lab Science (CLS), Chemistry, or a human biological science with 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry preferred.

* Visa sponsorship is not available for this position; Also, Mayo Clinic DOES NOT participate in the F-1 STEM OPT extension program* Additional qualifications Bachelor’s degree and HTL certified through the ASCP Board of Registry. Graduate of a NAACLS accredited program preferred.

Graduates of the Mayo School of Health Sciences Histology Technician Program will receive preference.

  • Requires CV/Resume, cover letter, unofficial transcript(s), and for foreign trained lab personnel to provide a detailed equivalency evaluation to include US equivalent degree at the applicants expense.

  • For international/foreign trained applicants, it is the responsibility of the international/foreign to provide to Mayo Clinic the following information. The applicant is responsible for the cost associated with obtaining the equivalency evaluation.

License or certification Histotechnician (HT) or Histotechnologist (HTL) certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP). Board of Certification required at start date. Employees obtaining certification(s) after January 1, 2004 will be required to demonstrate evidence of ongoing maintenance of certification.

Compensation Detail Education, experience and tenure may be considered along with internal equity when job offers are extended. The minimum pay rate is $23.10 per hour.
