Position description

This is an exciting opportunity within the bioinformatics core , for talented individuals in field of bioinformatics to join a team that supports a wide variety of omics projects. They will support these projects under the guidance of senior level Informatics Specialist staff. They will develop scripts for data management, data extraction, and data analyses. They will help design and conduct analytical procedures, and contribute to the discussion of results, the writing of technical reports, and in the publication of relevant findings.

Our bioinformatics core supports the Clinical and Research arms of Mayo Clinic. Informatics Specialist staff supporting clinical projects work with labs in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology to develop, document, and implement clinical Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) based tests. Informatics Specialist staff supporting research projects work with principal investigators to conduct basic and translational science through the processing, analyzing, and interpretation of NGS data.

Qualifications

Recommended - Master’s degree in domain-relevant sciences (biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics, and statistics or health sciences) or domain informatics (computational biology, computational chemistry, bioinformatics, clinical informatics, medical imaging, and medical informatics) OR a BS in domain-relevant sciences with (1) at least 12 graduate level semester hours in informatics or domain-relevant sciences and (2) at least two years of informatics experience.

Additional qualifications

Preferred: Master’s degree in domain-relevant field (biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics, statistics, health sciences, computer science, computational biology, or bioinformatics).

Helpful: A basic knowledge of current next generation sequencing technologies and cancer biology.

Preferred: Experience with next generation sequencing and with Linux, Python, and R. Ability to think logically and systematically to analyze and evaluate alternate solutions.

Essential: Strong organization and documentation skills, proven written and oral communication skills, and the ability to work both independently and in a team environment.

Compensation Detail

Education, experience and tenure may be considered along with internal equity when job offers are extended. The minimum salary every 2 weeks is approx $2,919.20, based on a full-time position.
