Position description
The Schafer Lab is seeking a Veterinary Technologist to aid in the conduct of NIH-funded research. It is essential that the candidate be proficient or willing to become proficient in conducting and leading mouse experimentation, including: aseptic survival surgery, colony management, longitudinal blood collection, IP and IV injection treatments, behavioral testing, necropsy/tissue harvesting, and genotyping. The candidate should be able to develop and maintain IACUC protocols, manage organized databases, and perform basic statistical and graphical data analyses. The candidate should have an interest in studying mechanisms that contribute to age-related functional decline.
Provides medical care to animals used in support of lab project goals. Exercises independent professional judgment in the assessment of animal health and consults with veterinarians and investigators regarding appropriate diagnosis, therapy, and management. Assists in the planning, implementation, and modification of animal use in experiments. Works directly with the veterinarians and interacts with staff, residents, medical students, and other personnel using the animal facilities to exchange information and resolve problems. Serves as a surgical tech in the operating room, administering anesthesia and providing postoperative care. Trains residents/fellows/temporary lab personnel in laboratory animal methodology. Responsible for maintaining anesthetic, surgical, and radiological equipment and medical supplies, including pharmaceuticals. Additional duties may be assigned as the required to fulfill departmental responsibilities.
Qualifications
Associates degree in Veterinary Technology, Veterinary Technologist State Certification with two years experience with lab animal species required.
Additional qualifications
Certification as Laboratory Animal Technician or Laboratory Animal Technologist through the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science is desirable. Must be able to follow oral and written directions. Must have the ability to organize and carry out medical and surgical techniques independently. Good manual dexterity and must be able to meet the physical requirements of the position. Must be willing to work weekends and holidays. Must be able to work well with others.

Compensation Detail
Education, experience and tenure may be considered along with internal equity when job offers are extended. The minimum pay rate is $23.10 per hour.
