Non-Exempt Position Description JOB TITLE:Medical Lab Technician REPORTS TO:Lab Supervisor JOB SUMMARY: The Medical Lab Technician is responsible for performing a wide variety of laboratory procedures and analysis to obtain data for use in the diagnosis, and treatment of diseases in accordance with HPCMC philosophy, policies and procedures. This individual's overall performance supports the mission statement and commitment to patient-centered, timely, effective, efficient, and safe service. ACCOUNTABILITIES: Lab Testing *Performs a variety of automated and manual laboratory procedures using calibrated equipment and various apparatus. *Receives various specimens and performs various tests, following established laboratory techniques, including but not limited to hematology, urinalysis, chemistry and bacteriology. Performs other procedures as needed, i.e., serology and mycology. *Performs microscopic examination of specimens resulting in objective interpretation for diagnostic purposes, including using judgment to accurately identify premature and abnormal cells on a differential. *Performs testing on bacteriology cultures, assessing significance of organisms present, choosing appropriate tests to positively identify pathogens, and ensuring identification correlates with diagnosis and sensitivity. *Performs venipuncture and skin puncture to obtain blood samples for diagnostic purposes by drawing appropriate amount of blood, identifying specimens and transmitting to appropriate area for analysis. *Instruct patients in specimen collection procedures. *Processes specimens for referral according to established guidelines. *Reflects positive customer service and respectful interactions. Test Results *Provides information to providers regarding the significance of test results and appropriate testing available to confirm a diagnosis. *Decides whether results can be released depending on whether they correlate with the patient diagnosis, previous results and other test results. *Reports receipt of abnormal/critical test results to providers. *Distributes laboratory results to providers in a timely manner. Equipment/Supplies *Performs preventive maintenance and equipment calibration per prescribed procedure. *Troubleshoots problems independently using knowledge of equipment or procedure to make decisions as to what the possible causes may be. *Assists in maintaining adequate inventory of laboratory materials and supplies. Quality Assurance *Documents quality control according to lab protocol for each lab department (i.e., hemotology, chemistry, microbiology, and urology.) *Makes quality control decisions as to whether controls are within standard limits. *Analyzes control charts looking for trends, shifts, etc. Makes decision whether instrument or procedure is functioning properly. *Monitors equipment to ensure it is functioning properly at all times. Safety *Performs job tasks as trained, following safe practice guidelines. *Reports accidents and conditions that interfere with the safe, efficient completion of tasks. Peer/Co-Worker Relations *Resolves conflicts with peers and co-workers in a private setting. *Makes positive contributions to group discussions. *Refrains from criticism of others. *Treats peers and co-workers with respect. *Projects professionalism in communications and demeanor. Performs other related duties as directed by supervisor/manager. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: *Associate degree for medical laboratory technician from an accredited junior or community college. *Certification by an accredited national certification agency. *Adheres to laboratory standards. *Ability to work independently and make decisions without supervision. *Ensures the confidentiality of health information.
