New York Blood Center IBR - MBC Manager of Immunohematology Reference Laboratory in St. Paul, Minnesota

SUMMARY:

Primary duties are to coordinate and supervise all activities in the Immunohematology Reference Laboratory (IRL) and the Reagent Donor Program (RDP).

IRL responsibilities include overseeing clinical laboratory testing procedures, management of rare blood inventory, and supervision of laboratory staff. In addition to immunohematology testing this position is also responsible for red cell and platelet genotyping for characterizing donor genotypes and to assist with serology patient work ups. Provides expertise and consulting leadership within the Enterprise.

RDP responsibilities include supplying manufacturers of immunohematology reagents with red cells and plasma. Provides excellent customer to the reagent vendors and oversees the recruitment of donors for patients and the RDP.

Overall responsible for developing and maintain policies and procedures, oversee training and competency assessments, ensure compliance with requirements of all regulatory and accreditation agencies.

Assures proper personnel management and training, on-going educational opportunities and financial management of department. Promotes on-going Research and Development, and new business opportunities. Supports and promotes organizational goals, mission and vision.

DETAILS:

Department Operations and Process Improvements (25%)

  • Overall Responsibility for the technical accuracy and compliance of staff, computer systems, equipment and all processes involved in serologic and genetic testing of patient and donor samples, through development and maintenance of SOP’s and validation plans which are compliant with manufacturers package inserts, FDA and other regulating agencies.

  • Ensure clients receive accurate test results.

  • Responsible for laboratory operations on a 24hr/day, 7day/week basis.

  • Oversees the Reagent Donor Program by recruiting and retaining suitable source donors, identifying supplemental allogeneic red cell products are obtained from inventory and reagent vendors receive timely communications.

  • Manage staff schedules to align with department workload.

  • Assures department personnel are properly trained to perform assigned duties and maintains proper documentation of training including annual competency assessments of staff.

  • Oversees the molecular genotyping including DNA extraction, amplification, detection, and reporting of results.

  • Lead and participate in projects and process improvements to improve operational efficiency, customer service.

  • Communicates with multiple departments to sustain IBR's Sickle Cell donor program.

External Customer Service and Enterprise IRL Consulting (25%)

  • Turnaround times for external customer laboratory reports is timely and meets their requirements

  • Ensures staff are professionally communicating with clients, for example assisting clients with an understanding and explanation of laboratory results.

  • Participates in request for proposals (RFPs) for business opportunities for in areas of external client testing and commercial research. Includes making presentations to prospective customers.

  • Participates in training and educational presentations at conferences, workshops and with customers.

  • Timely follow up with customers on service issues and implements corrective actions when needed

  • Notifies customers of changes to service through presentations and formal service updates.

  • Provide enterprise-wide technical education, training and mentoring to RIBC, CBCKC and BBD. This includes the Enterprise-wide IRL conference calls, assisting with patient testing, standardizing procedures throughout the enterprise and providing case studies and training materials.

    Team Leadership and Staff Engagement (25%)

Quality and Regulatory (25%)

  • Develops quality control systems to maintain compliance with cGMPs and regulatory agencies.

  • Timely entry of deviations and corrective actions. Develops and implements corrective action as needed to resolve issues of non-compliance identified through periodic audits, competency assessment or routine process monitoring.

  • Assures regular review of department records, quality control data, and proficiency testing including periodic audits or records and systems.

  • Participates in educational activities and ensures staff are trained and competent.

  • Enters and reviews AABB and CAP proficiency surveys.

Education:

Medical Technologist MT (AMT) or Medical Laboratory Scientist MLS (ASCP).

Experience:

Five years relevant technical experience working in an Immunohematology Reference Laboratory.

Three year experience in supervising others.

Certifications:

Specialist in Blood Banking (SBB), or SBB eligible.

Other:

Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Ability to work independently organizes and prioritize duties and occasionally work irregular hours.

Excellent interpersonal, communication and leadership skills.

Understanding of red cell and platelet serologic methods.
