The R&D Engineering Manager is responsible for developing trans-catheter heart valve components, assemblies and devices utilizing a system-based approach to implement life-saving innovation in a highly collaborative work place.


  • Responsible for compliance with applicable Corporate and Divisional Policies and procedures.

  • Researches, develops, designs, and evaluates heart valve therapy implantation devices. The initial focus for this role is optimizing our catheter system in support of ongoing clinical and initial commercial experience. Medium term, expectations will shift towards developing ideas and refining concepts to support future device and therapy evolution.

  • Establishes design requirements and conducts feasibility studies to verify capability and functionality.

  • Develops new concepts from initial design to market release.

  • Manages and provides direction to staff members and coordinates R&D project activities with the greater cross-functional team.

  • Submits intellectual property disclosures and participates in the patent submission process.

  • Maintains detailed documentation throughout all phases of research and development.

  • Investigates and evaluates to benchmark existing technologies.

  • Reviews or coordinates vendor activities to support development objectives.

  • Work is performed without appreciable direction. Exercises considerable latitude in determining technical objectives of assignment. Completed work is reviewed from a relatively long-term perspective for desired results.

  • This role requires providing work direction and guidance to exempt and/or skilled nonexempt levels of employees including conducting performance evaluations and assist in career development planning for staff members.

  • Understands business environment and relates extensive knowledge of internal and external technological activities and trends.

  • Interfaces with senior management on significant matters, often requiring the coordination of activity across organizational units. Participates in the development of technical contributors by facilitating and providing feedback, guidance and mentoring. May lead a project team. Provides technical leadership to business units. Exercises judgement independently.

  • Plans and organizes project assignments of substantial variety, complexity. Initiates or maintains schedule for projects and project milestones. Establishes priorities of individual or project assignments.

  • Selects methods and techniques to lead a project to completion. Erroneous decisions or recommendations would typically result in failure to achieve major organizational objectives.


  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering or related field plus 10+ years of related work experience with a complete understanding of specified functional area, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience. Advanced degree preferred.

  • Uses in-depth knowledge of business unit functions and cross group development of relationships. Expected to be recognized as an expert in work group and across functions. Will perform this job in a quality system environment. Failure to adequately perform tasks can result in noncompliance with governmental regulations.

  • Must have experience in managing small to medium size teams.

  • Must have experience in developing products from concept through initial commercialization in a regulated environment.

  • Class II or Class III medical device experience is preferred.

  • (Cognitive Skills) Works on complex problems where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of various factors. Exercises judgment within broadly defined practices and policies in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. Has broad knowledge of various technical alternatives and their potential impact on the business.
