The Staff R&D Engineer will use multidisciplinary engineering knowledge to design and develop innovative new products in the dynamic structural heart space where Abbott is a leading provider of solutions.

  • Conceptualize new devices using material knowledge and innovative mechanical design

  • Plan, coordinate, and execute activity in support of project goals

  • Conceive and build prototypes

  • Establish product and test method requirements and specifications

  • Run empirical and experimental analysis

  • Develop test methods and clinically relevant models

  • Comply with U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, other regulatory requirements, company policies, operating procedures, processes, and task assignments

  • Maintain positive and cooperative communications and collaboration with all levels of employees, customers, contractors, and vendors

  • Support animal and bench testing and clinical evaluations

  • Identify and mitigate project risks

  • Maintain knowledge of the developing clinical environment (i.e. current treatment methods, evolving clinical needs etc.)

  • Investigate issues and define root causes in complex systems

  • Work with outside consultants, vendors, and the medical community

  • May manage and supervise technicians, co-ops/interns, and entry level engineers


  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Biomedical Engineering. MS degree in Mechanical or Biomedical Engineering preferred

  • 8+ years with MS degree or 10+ years with BS degree - Related work experience, primarily in research, product development, or other relevant engineering discipline

  • Strong and demonstrated product design experience. Experience designing and testing medical devices preferred

  • Strong verbal and written communications with ability to effectively communicate at multiple levels in the organization

  • Ability to work within cross-functional teams as an individual contributor in a fast-paced, changing environment

  • Knowledge and understanding of a variety of engineering disciplines, theories and concepts, to support development of innovative approaches to problem solving

  • Project management skills

  • Experience with CAD modeling tools, SolidWorks preferred

  • Experience with a variety of manufacturing processes and design for manufacturability preferred

  • Experience with catheters, tissue, metals, or stent design preferred

Skills & Abilities:

  • Anticipate design obstacles and emerging issues and establish mitigation plans

  • Lead functional group to complete a product design

  • Understand and apply external regulations for area of technical expertise

  • Participate in the crafting of the regulatory/technical strategy

  • Ability to defend technical position cross-functionally

  • Ability to write a comprehensive report

  • Ability to present to management

  • Define development strategy

  • Evaluate technical risks and develop risk mitigation strategies

  • Ability to solve complex problems

  • Develop, communicate, and build consensus for operating goals that are in alignment with division

  • Provide guidance towards achieving department objectives
